Overview

Each year, NUSEA partners closely with one city to create a program from scratch. NUSEA and local supporters will team up to identify the proper squash and academic facility, recruit one or two school partners, develop a founding Board of Directors and hire an Executive Director. These are the four most important building blocks to launching a successful urban squash and education program.

In return for meeting certain agreed-upon benchmarks, the start-up program will be eligible for a $50,000, three year challenge grant from NUSEA. Each year, NUSEA will give one dollar to the program for every two dollars it is able to raise from other sources. The maximum grant a program can receive from NUSEA in each year is $50,000 and this will be given only if the program receives $100,000 from other contributors. Another requirement to the NUSEA grant is that the program raise new dollars in each of the three years. In other words, if a program is to receive NUSEA’s $50,000 grant in year two, it will need to demonstrate that the $100,000 it raised is either increased funding from its existing year one donors, or funding from new donors. This same requirement holds true for the third and final year grant. If a program raises less than $100,000 in any given year, it may still receive 50% of these dollars from NUSEA.

Cities may best position themselves for selection as NUSEA’s star program by demonstrating ‘solid irons in the fire’ as they concern commitments of a practice facility, school partner, a founding board, sufficient start-up capital, and a solid fundraising plan.
