Baltimore SquashWise

Baltimore SquashWise is pleased to be selected as a NUSEA Star Program! Baltimore is home to a thriving squash and philanthropic community, and it is an ideal location for a new urban squash and education program. Since its inception in Spring 2007, BSW has appointed five Board members with extensive non-profit and management experience, including:

  • Nancy Cushman: President, Meadow Mill Athletic Club
  • Douglas Hoffberger: President, Keystone Realty Company, Inc.; Director & Treasurer, The Hoffberger Foundation
  • Owen Knott: Chief Operating Officer, Knott Mechanical, Inc.; Vice President, The Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Foundation
  • Charles Wise: Director, Energy & Federal Partnerships, Verdiem
  • Greg Zaff: Executive Director, NUSEA

Additional Board members and a Board Chair will be appointed by the end of November. Abby Markoe will serve as Acting Program Director for the 2007-2008 planning year.

Baltimore SquashWise is conducting a year of organizational preparation, reaching out to key financial and organizational partners and filing for 501(c)3 status in order to begin programming for the 2008 school year. BSW is formalizing its relationship with the Baltimore City Public School System in order to select a school partner by the end of December 2007. The program will enroll 12-16 sixth graders in its inaugural year, and will double and triple enrolment in subsequent years. The Meadow Mill Athletic Club is donating court time and tutoring space, and BSW has reached out to Sylvan Learning Systems to develop best-practices for middle-school tutoring.

BSW is grateful to the following organizations for their financial, in-kind, and programmatic support:

  • The Maryland State Squash Racquets Association
  • The W.P. Carey Foundation
  • Harrow Sports
  • National Urban Squash and Education Association (NUSEA)
